Russian type designer, graphic artist, lecturer. He was born in 1950, on 26th of July, in Astrakhan. In 1989 Safaev graduated from the Moscow Printing Institute (now Moscow State University of Printing), then worked for ParaGraph and ParaType as a type designer (1991-2003). He is a member of the professional club of designers Portfelio (Moscow), a member of the Moscow Artists Union and a member of the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), co-founder of the Type Designers Association, Moscow. He was awarded by Diploma named after A.Rodchenko (1994) and by Diploma in the category «Artn-design» (1995) at the All-Russian contest «Design». Safaev is a winner of International type contests TDC'99 (New-York, 1999) and «bukva:raz!» (Moscow, 2001). In 1997 he was recommended for the State Prize of Russian Federation in the domain of literature and art (collective). He lectures at the National Institute of Design Of Russian Designers Union. Safaev is a Head of his own boutique at Higher Academic School Of Graphic Design (2002-2008). He designed some 100 types: FreeSet, PT Hermes, PT Proun, PT Rodchenko, ITC Stenberg, Unovis, etc. He developed Cyrillic versions of Latin types: ITC Kabel, ITC New Baskerville, ITC Officina Sans, ITC Officina Serif, FF Meta (the last three with Olga Chaeva), etc. Safaev was awarded by Diploma at contest TDC2 2000 (type Mirra) and by Diploma at contest «bukva:raz!!» in 2001 (type «Serp and Molot»).
