Hinting is an approach to the aliasing problem in rendering scalable fonts. It's a process of applying special instructions to contours of letters that improve font appearance in small sizes or low resolutions.
ParaType offers a professional manual hinting of TrueType and OpenType/TrueType fonts.
There are 2 levels of quality that assure predefined "quality criteria" for certain character sets for definite point size ranges. In the table below you may see samples of Basic & High Levels of ParaType hinting together with autohinted fonts and fonts without hints.
Detailed information about criteria and specification of quality levels you may find in PDF presentation.
